Autumn

An Autumn state of Mind

The sound of dry leaves like paper under my bare feet,
The coldness of the soil that never really warms from the frosty night air,
The smell of damp dying plants and the smell of burning leaves,
This was autumn.

The heat of the mid day and the burst of fall colours,
Back packs full of books, and the smell of university halls,
football and timetables,
This was autumn.

Closed park gates and late fall hikes,
Campfires and walks on beaches to cold for swimming,
The sound of loons on the lake,
This was Autumn.

Warm thermoses of coffee and sweatshirts with grass stains on the elbows,
Drifting leaves and the sound of dry grass blowing in the wind,
Dust blowing along gravel rounds and the crunch of car tires as I pull off to watch the leaves fall,
This was Autumn.

Stacks of G-d damn papers and the smell of coffee,
Knowing that another day will pass before the warm days end and you will be too busy to notice,
Washing laundry and briefly glancing out and noticing the pool is closed,
This is Autumn.

Realising that one of the seasons you liked so much passes with out notice,
seeing life blazing past and knowing very little has changed except the seasons,
This is Autumn.
