Back in March, President Trump signed an executive order that targeted the Smithsonian it read as follows: “Over the past decade, Americans have witnessed a concerted and widespread effort to rewrite our Nation’s history, replacing objective facts with a distorted narrative driven by ideology rather than truth.” It is in reality an effort to rewrite history. The order, cited a desire to remove “improper ideology” – from institutions like the Smithsonian.
The German Nazi regime's "Decree for the Protection of People and State" (popularly known as the Reichstag Fire Decree) was issued on February 28, 1933, just a day after the Reichstag fire.
While the decree's primary function was to suspend civil liberties and allow for the imprisonment of political opponents, it was a foundational document for the systematic repression of all ideologies that were not aligned with Nazism. It explicitly restricted "the right of free expression of opinion, including freedom of the press, the right of assembly and the right of association." Basically it called for represion of improper Ideology. Does that sound familiar?
